Boljun Castle
Boljun Castle, Istrian defensive fortification
Boljun Castle is a fortress built on top of the same named hill, it was built and upgraded from the 11th to the 17th century. It got its name after the restoration of the castle by the Slavs.
It had a very tumultuous history from the very beginning, mostly because of its location along the road mwhich used to be the main and only road that led over the Učka mountain to Istria. In times of war, it successfully provided shelter to the inhabitants of Boljun and its surroundings (eg 1332, 1612…).
Inside the castle, the round stone table offers a beautiful view of the valley, from where one can imagine the defenders of Boljun watching the arrival of the Venetian mercenary army from the direction of Plomin in 1612.
At that time, of all the castles of the Duchy of Pazin, only Boljun and Pazin successfully resisted the attacks.
