From Royal Resort to Modern Luxury: The Story of Kraljevica’s Hotel Liburnia

The History of Liburnia: From Hotel to Hospital

The Liburnia Hotel, built in 1904, is one of the most iconic architectural landmarks on the Kvarner coast. Initially designed as a luxury hotel in the Art Nouveau style, Liburnia was a symbol of high-class tourism during its “golden age.” The name “Liburnia” reflected the prestige and elegance that radiated from every room. With 40 luxurious rooms offering stunning views of the sea and the Oštro peninsula, the hotel was the place to be for the elite and famous guests of the time.

However, shortly after 1911, the building changed its purpose. It became a children’s sanatorium, and later a military hospital during World War I. After the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the building continued to serve as a hospital and tuberculosis sanatorium, and in 1924, it became known as the “Orthopedic Hospital of Kraljevica,” attracting patients for specialized treatments.

Despite its significance, the building changed ownership several times over the decades, and after the hospital closed in 1991, the building began to deteriorate. This year, however, there is renewed optimism with plans for a major renovation.

A New Beginning: Turning the Building into a Luxury Hotel

Plans to transform the old structure into a five-star luxury hotel are creating a lot of excitement and hope among the local community. According to the Liburnia investors group, the project’s value exceeds 37 million kuna, with plans to create over 40 new jobs. The renovation will preserve the historic exterior of the building, while completely redesigning the interior to accommodate a modern, luxury hotel.

Liburnia: A Nostalgic Past and a Town’s Symbol

For many of the residents of Kraljevica, Liburnia is more than just a building – it is a symbol of memories of better times. Although it is now in ruins, the building has left a deep mark on the town’s collective memory. “I remember when the orthopedic hospital was here,” writes one local. The dilapidated hotel, without a roof and with crumbling walls, stands today as a shadow of its former glory.

For those who witnessed its splendor, Liburnia was a distant dream. From the time when postcards of Kraljevica featured the hotel prominently on the front to the present day, Liburnia has been a symbol of change. While the building has served many functions throughout its history, it has always been at the heart of the town, representing both luxury and hope.

A Bridge Between the Past and the Future

The renovation of the Liburnia Hotel is more than just the restoration of a building; it is a symbol of hope, renewal, and new beginnings for Kraljevica. By skillfully balancing respect for history with the introduction of modern elements, Liburnia is set to become a key tourism center on the Kvarner Bay, attracting visitors with a unique experience.
